WIP Wednesday: Rainbow Text Mini

I’m on vacation from work this week, so I’ve been trying to spend my time working on a mini that’s due to be sent out by August 31. It’s for a swap that requires us to use at least two text prints… I’m using quite a few more than that.

A mini I'm working on for an Instagram swap

I rotated through at least a half dozen options before finally settling on this pattern, Glam Garlands by Elizabeth Hartman from her book Modern Patchwork. My partner seems to be a fan of rainbows, so I dug deep into my collection of text prints to create (most of) a rainbow.

A mini I'm working on for an Instagram swap

I’ve got it all basted and have spent the last 4 hours not quilting it, even though I could probably be (nearly) done by now if I’d just get going on it. I’m a little torn about how to quilt it though – I had been thinking about long lines down the length designed maybe to look like crepe paper garlands or something like that. But then I wondered if that was too boring and thought about maybe emphasizing the garlands by stitching in the ditch round them and then densely quilting the background with pebbles or stippling, so that it sits back and the garlands pop out. I really just need to make a decision because I’m planning to be out of town for three days and it needs to be finished before that so that I’m not rushed in the last day before it needs to be sent.

Anyway, it’s my birthday this week, so it’s time for a giveaway. Basically the winner – who can be from anywhere – can choose from one of two prizes.

The first prize I haven’t really put it together yet, but I’m going to make a scrap bundle of text prints:

Fabrics for a mini I've been working on

This scrap bundle might include bits of all of these fabrics (or it might not – some of them I don’t have enough left to call them scraps really) as well as some of the rest of my giant collection of text fabrics.

And the second prize will be a charm pack of all the prints from Lizzy House’s Constellations line of fabrics.

Both prizes will contain similar amounts of fabric – I’ll aim to have them both approximately the same weight. To enter, follow the prompts on Rafflecopter:

(Deleting the Rafflecopter link.)

(Ugh. I clearly didn’t edit that well. Forgive the misspelling. And make sure you follow the prompt – I will be checking!)

Edited to Add: I can’t figure out how to make this work on WordPress. They do NOT like script based HTML. So let’s skip that.

Same deal, just with me using Random.org to figure out a winner! Please leave a comment below telling me which of the two prizes you’d rather win. That’s it! I’ll be accepting entries until 11:59pm on Tuesday, September 1st and will draw the winner the next day when I’m home from work. Anyone anywhere around the world can enter.

Also, please don’t enter this giveaway into any giveaway aggregate services. I’m happy for anyone at all to enter, but I’d rather it be organically found by followers and people who’ve also linked up via one of the below Wednesday Link-ups.

  1. I will be honest I was intrigued the other day when you picked up so many text prints and wondered how you would make them all go together but I am liking what you came up with. It’s so hard to pick I like both prizes for different reasons. I really like the black equations print but am a sucker for a charm pack.

    1. Haha… well, if you win (I haven’t drawn a name yet – trying to answer my comments first!), maybe I’ll have to cut you a charm pack out of text, rather than sending scraps? I love charm packs too, even though I’ve got a bit of a stack of unused ones… maybe it’s time to stop picking them up? (Nah.)

    1. That’s one of my favourite ways to quilt things too… alas it takes so much time! I wound up doing the crepe paper ribbon idea instead, which I hope turned out okay! I never managed to get a good picture of the mini before I sent it away, but I’m hoping to show it one of these days.

  2. Happy birthday! So nice to see new posts from you. I would love the Lizzie House charms, I loved that line but missed it somehow.

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

I’m glad to be back – all summer long, every time I thought about writing, I’d just kind of turn my brain in another direction and forget all about it. I guess I needed a break! Now to catch up on posting about all the things I’ve been working on, though!

Best wishes in the draw! Constellations is a great line!

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes again 😀

Also, had to laugh about whichever is easier to part with! I actually cut 3 charm packs of the Lizzy House fabric with the intention of giving away two (one is long gone – Lizzy House Mini swap extra), but this one has been waiting! And I’ve got tons of text fabric, so it’s not hard to give away either. If you win (I haven’t drawn yet… I’m late, today, getting everything done!), you’re going to have to decide!

  3. Happy Birthday! I don’t see much of you anymore as I think you’ve moved to IG and I don’t have an account. Or maybe you’re just too busy sewing to show much 😉 I love the rainbow of text prints, though Lizzy House is a very close second.

    1. I’ve been pretty lazy this summer about the blog… I’ve definitely been using IG a lot (because it’s perfect for laziness!) but mostly I just wanted a break from thinking about posting. Now I just need to catch up on posting the things I’ve been making…. (it’s pretty much all been minis, anyway!)

  4. Happy birthday! I’m celebrating mine this week too. 😉 Wasn’t it always hard to be out of school so no one ever remembered your birthday? That’s the downside of having vacation birthdays. I like that garland pattern and it looks so quick to sew up. You’ve got a lucky partner no matter how you quilt it up (though I hope you post a photo to show us what you did!). I’d be thrilled to win the texty rainbow bundle. Enjoy your special week!

    1. End of August birthdays are the worst! Every year my parents would try to do a party on that last weekend, but it was pretty much always the last long weekend of the summer and EVERYONE would be out of town for one last trip to the lake before school started again. I was lucky I could scrap up my sister to attend my birthdays.

Anyway, belated birthday wishes to you too! I hope you had a great one!

  5. Wishing you a wonderful birthday! Either prize would be appreciated and used not stashed. I’d even take your scraps for my 1.5″ postage stamp quilt. kthurn(at)bektel(dot)com

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes! Best wishes in the draw!

(PS. if you send me an email with your address, I’ll send you out a little bundle of small scraps whether you win or not! I went through my scrap bins the other day and separated out all the ones I thought were smaller than I might use, so they may as well go to you, rather than into the trash bin! Is there any particular colours you’re looking for or just anything/everything?)

  6. I’d love to win the text prints. Thanks for the chance. Can’t wait to see which quilting design you choose for your mini.

  7. oh man, my love of text prints has me voting for that one. Thank you for the fun giveaway! Have a great birthday. 😀

    1. Haha… best wishes in the giveaway Anne! (I’ve not drawn just yet… trying to answer all my comments first, which maybe wasn’t my brightest idea! It’s taking forever!) Anyway, text prints are very alluring, aren’t they? (And I’ve got a nice big collection to pull from, though it is mostly neutrals rather than these great colours!)

  8. Happy Birthday! Really love your rainbow texty mini – how big will the finished piece be? Great idea to downsize the Glam Garlands pattern. I’d love to win the rainbow bundle!

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

The mini is a little bigger than I quite wanted it to be – about 18″ x 24″ – but it’s not a bad size. I really like how it turned out in the end (and hope my mini recipient will like it too!).

  9. Happy Birthday!!!! I love this design that you are creating, looks awesome! I love both choices that you are offering😉

  10. Happy birthday! I’ve been following you here and on IG for quite some time now. Love your generous picks for the giveaway. but this time I’d go for Constellations. Thank you and have a great day. xxx

  11. Happy Birthday! I love your mini that is full of text prints! And thanks for the giveaway, too – my choice would be the text print bundle, but the charm pack looks intriguing also!

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

I had fun pulling out different fabrics to create the rainbow of text prints! Alas – no orange prints! (I did have some rust ones, but didn’t feel like they quite fit in). I’ll have to rectify that, anyway!

  12. Happy Birthday. I love the way you used the text prints in your mini. I’ve spent hours “not quilting” as well. Sometimes you’re just not ready to get started. Thanks for offering the giveaway……I’d be happy with either. Enjoy the rest of your vacation.

    1. Thanks for the kind words and birthday wishes 😀 I wound up leaving it until the last day of my vacation and blared through it pretty quickly, but I like how it turned out! I’m hoping to get a post written about it soon.

  13. Hi! I found your site via Freshly Pieced’s WIP Wednesday. I love your Glam Garland mini! I totally understand getting stuck on deciding a quilting design. I’ve had a quilt sitting in my studio for MONTHS because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I’ve finally figured it out and am going to be working on it next week. I hope you find a design you’re thrilled about. If I won the giveaway, I’d choose the Lizzy House charm pack. Thanks for the chance to win!

    1. Quilting usually seems to be my hold-up when it comes to finishing things! Well, no, maybe it’s the basting that’s the hold up. But the quilting doesn’t help… there’s just so many options and what if I choose the wrong one? 😀

  14. Love your mini. I would like the text prints please. I have only one text print. Cdahlgren at live dot com

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes! And best of luck in the giveaway! (Bonne chance! <– I wish I'd kept up learning French – I can't remember if that's the right spelling or not!)

  15. Happy Birthday! Thanks for the giveaway. I would like to win the constellations but anything you give would be very generous.

  16. Happy Birthday! I love your mini! Deciding how to quilt something is almost always the hardest isn’t it? It is for me anyway. What a fun giveaway. I love constellation, but I love text fabric more–especially rainbow! Thanks for the eye candy.

    1. I definitely struggle with making decisions about quilting – I usually wind up going a little simpler than I want to, just because it tends to be faster! Maybe one day I’ll go full on custom quilt style on something I’ve made, though. I guess we’ll see!

      Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  17. I like your progress so far on the quilt. I would love the constellation charm pack!

  18. I have often thought about making that pattern, and it looks great in the text prints you’ve used! Love it! I have spent ages not quilting too. I am so indecisive, not knowing if to quilt densely or simply! I love the pebbling effect, but it can be time consuming when working to a deadline! Happy birthday! Love the text prints 🙂

    1. I’m really happy with how my mini turned out! I thought it would be a good pattern to shrink, since the blocks are improv and all it really took was getting rid of the biggest block size and adding one smaller one. I really want to try it again at full size though and using some special fabrics (maybe!).

Because of the deadline, I wound up going with the simpler quilting (which often happens to me!), but I like how it turned out in the end.. I think the quilting suited it (even if I really do like the look of a very densely quilted quilt).

  19. Happy Birthday! Either would be amazing! I’m also in the textmemini swap and look forward to sending mine next week and seeing all the amazing minis like yours that people have created!

    1. You got a fun mini in the swap – how nice that your partner tailored it to your tastes with the dog theme! I just saw it today and just posted the one I received, which says “Create” and will make my mother happy because she saw my mosaic which had a naughty word (ie. the f word!) in one of the mosaic photos and she kept having to put her thumb over that picture in my mosaic while she was looking at it. I’d have laughed if I’d gotten a swear-happy mini, just because it would have annoyed her so much 😀

I love these swaps just for seeing all the incredible stuff that everyone makes. Did you do the Cotton and Steel mini swap? Wow was there an incredible amount of incredible work in that swap group!

      1. I’m glad you got a mini you loved from that swap! I didn’t do the Cotton and Steel swap but kind of wish I had. There was some great work in that one! The only other swap I’ve done was the #handpiecedminiswap

        1. There was a TON of great stuff in the Cotton and Steel swap – I’m really glad I got in on that one! I wish I could have kept what I made, though. I guess I could make one for myself, but it felt like a lot of work at the time, so probably I won’t 😀

The hand-pieced swap had some really pretty things that went by in my feed too. I’ve never really gotten into EPP (well, I’ve never tried it…) so I stayed away from that one. I’ve got a little EPP kit now though so I’m going to have to give it a go one of these days. (I buy too many kits and never use them: may this not be one of those.)

Anyway, I joined too many swaps this year – I feel like all my creative energy went to doing things for other people, which isn’t the worst thing, but is sometimes frustrating when you’ve got something of your own that you’d like to be doing. I seem to do this every year and then regret it just a little and then make a pact to do it differently next year… and then some really awesome sounding swap comes along and I slip back into it again 😀

  20. Happy Birthday! Enjoy your special day and your time off – doing things you love. :o)
I’m in love with your rainbow text prints and they look fantastic as Glam Garlands. A fabulous combination! I think your partner will be delighted with this mini. Hope you sort out the quilting (something which takes me longer to figure out more times than not ;o).

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes Katherine! I did have a nice weekend.

I finally had to settle down and quilt it, but I definitely left it right up to the last minute – I just barely squeaked it in under the deadline (though I’m sure it didn’t leave the post office till the next day anyway…..). I wound up going with the kind of crepe paper ribbons idea – it was faster, in the end, and I like the way it looks, so it’s all good!

  21. Lizzy House. And I’ve made this quilt- I quilted wavy lines with my walking quilt, to look like crepe paper. It worked and i loved it (and it was soooo fast!)

    1. I wound up quilting mine essentially the same way! It was super fast – certainly faster than pebbling the background would be and I felt like it worked, in a thematic way, if I’ve got paper garlands and imaginary crepe ribbons and I also added a very few loopy lines in a different colour of quilting to add just a little more interest.

  22. Happy Birthday, Crystal! I hope the smoke in Calgary clears up a bit for you. I would pick the Lizzy House Constellations line, as it is one of my favourites. I love how your mini is turning out too. I have that book, but never thought to make a mini with that pattern. 🙂

    1. Did you guys get hit with all that smoke too or did you manage to avoid it? I’m so glad it’s gone – it was rough for a few days (and I hear it was even worse while I was out of town… I think I missed the worst days of it).

I’m really happy with how the mini turned out! To “convert” the pattern, I dropped the largest size and then made a smaller size than her smallest listed one. It worked out pretty well, I thought, though the mini wound up a bit bigger than I sometimes like making (it was about 18×24). I’m not sure if my partner likes it – she hasn’t said or liked anything on ANY of my posts on IG since I switched to this idea, but she had been liking things before when I’d been planning something with a more controlled colour palette … Ah well, she had a tough mosaic but tons and tons of mosaics in general and so I took my inspiration from other swap mosaics she’d posted, rather than the text-specific one.

  23. Happy Birthday! Love both of your quilting ideas and wish you luck deciding. A giveaway too! I’d pick the text prints as they seem to be making their way into my stash recently. Thanks for the chance.

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

I wound up doing the crepe paper ribbon idea… I think it turned out okay, though I still really love the idea of doing a dense background so the garlands would pop out. Oh well, maybe someday in the future I’ll make another version of this quilt and try it out!

  24. I like the straight line quilting idea. As we discussed (can you call blog comments a discussion?), I love the text prints the best. Happy birthday, enjoy!

    ljridge4511 (at) gmail (dot) com

    1. I think of blog comments as a discussion, though I rarely go beyond one or two responses on the same topic! I don’t know… it’s the nearest we can get to discussion, maybe, without actually being in person (and I don’t know any quilters IRL, so this is as good as it gets for me!).

Anyway, thanks for the birthday wishes!

  25. Great mini with great fabrics. I like your blog name. I found you through the Wednesday link-up. Thanks for the chance to win.

  26. I vote for outlining and dense background quilting. Not expected, is what I’m thinking. I’d chose text prints. Cheers!

    1. Yeah, that’s really how I wanted to quilt it, though I wound up doing a fairly dense wave line/crepe ribbons style quilting, just because of the time factor. Hopefully someday I’ll make a full size quilt of this pattern and then I can quilt it however I like and without a time crunch!

  27. Happy Birthday! I would choose the text prints for their greater randomness, though Lizzy has some really charming night sky drawings, too. (I always feel bad, choosing.)

    1. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

And best wishes with the draw! (I’m trying to answer all my comments first, so I haven’t drawn a winner yet!)

  28. Hi there Kristel,
    What an awesome-looking quilt!!!
If I were the winner, I would choose your text scraps. I have just started looking into Modern quilting(having been a traditional quilter for the last 20+ years) and do not yet have a stash of quilting fabrics with words/text on them!
PS: I also LOVE rainbows and scraps!!!
    Thanks!
    Quilty Huggs,
    Jacqueline

    1. I haven’t done my draw yet, so best wishes! (Hoping to answer my comments first, but I need to stop procrastinating/playing dumb games on my tablet and just do it!)

Text prints are one of my favourite types for backgrounds (though I do have some that are a little too unwieldy print and colour-wise for that). They’re probably my favourite trend in the fabric world and I’m so glad it seems to be sticking around!

  29. I love text fabrics! And that is an awesome rainbow of them. So that would be my pick. Plus I just love scraps!

    1. I love scraps too – its one of my favourite “extras” to receive in swaps that I do online… it’s always fun to add a little of someone else’s stash to your collection, plus I keep saying I’m going to make a scrappy log cabin quilt some day, so I need lots of variety!

I’m hoping to answer all my comments before drawing the winner, so best of luck!
